Does it matter if something is Realistic or not?

Discussion from a deleted realm of anonymity:
-Should a story be realistic to avoid a reader backlash of complaining that something isn't possible, so it deserves to be whined about as a signal of virtue to others? Or is the writer overthinking the consequences of adding something in their story that isn't realistic?
-Do what works. Stories over the millenniums have favored the entertainment value over the realistic value. Take “The Odyssey” by Homer for example as that was written thousands of years ago, and features a wacky unrealistic story much like Earthbound; and it has been valued as a great epic by millions of voices throughout the millenniums, who don’t bring up its falsehoods when compared to reality, but praise the work as entertainment.
-It doesn't matter, so long as the established world has clearly defined rules and boundaries. Readers should be able to escape into the writer's world. Should maintain the suspension of disbelief.
-Graphical realism limits games, while storytelling realism enhances it.
