How to Write a Misunderstood Character?

Staff member
When writing a Character with the Misunderstood archetype, does the plot need to reveal to the audience that they were misunderstanding the character since they first appeared?

It’s kinda of a paradox in that a deus ex machina is required for misunderstood situations, whilst the realist scenario of affairs is that the character’s misunderstanding becomes the canon reception from the character.

This sort of situation does legitimize the use of headcanons, as unless an obvious character subversion occurs, the only way to interpret a character from a different angle, is to rationalize the character as being misunderstood in intentions.

What do you think? What advice would you give in writing misunderstood characters?
